What Is Starting 5?
Starting 5 is a daily basketball knowledge game built around real NBA lineups. Each puzzle selects one team and season, then challenges you to name the five players who made up its starting unit. You solve the lineup one position at a time, with five attempts available for each roster spot. The premise is simple, but the answers reach much deeper than superstar trivia. Recognizing a famous point guard or center may get you started; remembering the less celebrated fourth and fifth starters is often what separates a good score from a perfect one. That balance makes the game approachable for casual fans and surprisingly demanding for people who know decades of NBA history.
How the Daily Puzzle Works
The team and season appear at the top of the board, along with a short piece of context about that campaign. The five lineup slots are arranged by position. Select a slot, search for a player, and lock in your answer. A correct guess completes that position, while a wrong guess opens the next layer of information. Each player can be solved in up to five guesses. An answer found on the first try is worth 200 points, and the available score falls with each miss until the final attempt is worth 25 points. Solving all five positions immediately produces the maximum score of 1,000.
The Progressive Hint System
Starting 5 does not leave you completely stuck after an incorrect answer. Its clues become more useful as your remaining attempts decrease: - An early miss reveals practical identifiers such as jersey number, age, and height. - Additional misses reveal the player's first name one letter at a time. - The last name remains the key piece you must supply to finish the position. This creates a satisfying risk-and-reward decision. Experienced fans can chase a high score from memory, while everyone else can trade points for information and still complete the lineup. The best clues also reward deduction: a player's size, number, age, and position can narrow a large roster to a very short list.
What Counts as a Starter?
The selected lineups are based on starts from both the regular season and playoffs rather than an arbitrary list of the team's five most famous names. That distinction matters. Injuries, trades, lineup experiments, postseason rotations, and role changes can all produce a starting five that differs from the version fans remember most clearly. The game's lineup data is assembled from historical basketball records and manually reviewed. As a result, every round is also a compact tour through a real season: championship teams, short-lived combinations, role players who became essential, and familiar stars at very different stages of their careers.
Daily Play, Archive, and Gauntlet
A new daily lineup arrives at midnight Eastern Time. The recurring puzzle supports a daily leaderboard, personal streaks, and a Player of the Week race, giving each score a little more meaning than a one-off trivia result. Players who want more than one lineup can use the archive with a free account. Gauntlet mode turns the idea into a faster endurance challenge: identify five randomly selected teams within a ten-minute total limit. Its pool spans more than 1,100 team seasons dating back to the 1960s, and it can be played across all eras or narrowed to a single decade.
How to play
- Read the clue — a player silhouette, stat line or grid of teams.
- Enter your answer; matching attributes are highlighted.
- Solve it within the allowed guesses to keep your streak alive.
Tips & strategy
Think about the team and era first; positions and stats then usually leave only a couple of plausible players.
